John Strand (Allies; Bid 1) vs. Tal Seaman (Axis)

German FlagItalian Flag
The POC are even at the end of Turn 8.
The Axis wins because of the Allied 1 POC bid.

Turn 1

The Allies open with a "Barents-in-One".
Barents - 447, 8x117's, Ark Royal, 2x336's (both make their speed rolls)
North Sea - 5x444's, 2x016's
North Atl. - 3x443's
South Atl. - 2x553's, 2x443's, Eagle

The Axis respond by sending all 7 German surface ships and all 4 Italian cruisers to the South Atlantic. All the 225's make their speed rolls. The 3 UBoats are placed in North Atlantic. German LBA is placed in the Barents and the Allied LBA is placed in the Med. All the Allied air and ASW shots fail, but so does the Axis LBA and UBoat return fire. In the South Atlantic, the Allies target the 2-defense-factor ships and ignore the 357's. Graf Spee, Lutzow and Admiral Hipper are sunk and the Admiral Scheer is disabled but undamaged. German return fire sinks the Nelson and Eagle, damages the Ramillies with 3 points and disables her, and both the Rodney and Revenge are disabled but undamaged. The 357's and the Blucher make their oiling rolls. The Italian cruisers base in Neutral Port. All British ships still at sea return to England.

Areas controlled:
Allies - North Sea, Barents
Axis - South Atl., Med.
POC - Axis +3

Turn 2

The British are forced to spread out to defend against the 3 oiled ships in the South Atlantic:
Barents - Ark Royal, Formidable, 447, 5x117's, 2x336's (both made their speed rolls)
North Sea - 5x444's, 2x016's
North Atl. - 2x456's, 2x443's, 2x117's
South Atl. - Rodney, Ramillies(3), Revenge, Resolution, Exeter

The Italian cruisers return to the Med. All the German surface ships and U-boats sortie to the North Sea, but Admiral Scheer fails its speed roll and goes to France. British ASW rolls well, sinking 3 of the 4 U-boats, but fails to disable the survivor, and the U-boats break the blockade. The U-boat return shot and both sides' LBA miss, but the Courageous disables both the Bismarck and the Scharnhorst in the North Sea. In the ensuing surface combat, the British battle line sinks the Gneisenau and Blucher, while the outgunned Germans damage the Queen Elizabeth for 4 points and the Barham for 2 points.

Areas controlled:
Allies - Barents, North Atl., South Atl.
Axis - Med
Uncontrolled - Baltic, North Sea
POC - Axis +2

Turn 3

The Allies have to spread out (again) because the U-boats broke the North Sea last turn.

Barents: KGV, PoW, DoY, Renown, Repulse, Hood, Exeter, Formidable, Victorious (DoY and Repulse fail their speed rolls).
Baltic: Marat makes its participation roll and deploys
North Sea: Revenge, Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign, Norfolk, Suffolk, Sussex, Courageous, Glorious
North Atl.: Convoy 1A, Ark Royal, Ramillies(3), Resolution, Barham(2), Malaya, Kent
South Atl.: Rodney, Warspite, Valiant, Cumberland, Dorsetshire, Devonshire
England: Queen Elizabeth repairs all 4 damage points
Med: LBA

The Axis react by once again sending the entire Kriegsmarine and the 4 Italian cruisers to the South Atlantic. The Axis make all their speed rolls. The 2 U-boats are placed in the Baltic. The Axis LBA is placed in the Barents. In the Baltic, the Marat's ASW roll fails and the U-boats sink it in return. The Axis are also lucky in the Barents, sinking the Victorious with the LBA. The Allied LBA misses the Italian BB's in the Med.

In the South Atlantic, the Rodney, Valiant, Admiral Scheer and Gorizia sink, and the Scharnhorst and Warspite are damaged and disabled, while Prinz Eugen and Zara are also disabled to neutral port. The British cruisers flee and are not pursued. The Bismarck and Tirpitz both make their oiling rolls and remain at sea.

Axis Control: South Atlantic, Med.
Allied Control: Barents, North Sea, North Atlantic
Axis go up 2 POC for a current lead of +4 POC

Turn 4

No US ships join the fray this turn, but the October Revolution does sail. The Royal Navy spreads out in order to attrition the remaining Axis ships:

Baltic: October Revolution
Barents: Convoy 1A, Formidable, Renown, Repulse, KGV, PoW, DoY
North Sea: Ramillies(3), Barham(2), Malaya, Courageous, Glorious, Norfolk, Suffolk, Sussex, Kent
North Atlantic: Convoy 2B, Ark Royal, Hood, Anson, Queen Elizabeth, Devonshire, Dorsetshire, Cumberland, Exeter
South Atlantic: Warspite(2), Revenge, Resolution, Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign

The Italian cruisers return to the Med. The 4 U-boats are placed in the Baltic. All German surface ships go to the North Sea, the damaged Scharnhorst making her speed roll. Allied air is ineffectual, as is the German LBA, but the Zeppelin's aircraft sink the Suffolk in the North Sea. The October Revolution follows the Marat to the bottom of the Baltic due to another lucky U-boat shot. In the North Sea, the damaged Scharnhorst goes down but the British pay dearly for the effort, losing the Barham, Norfolk and Courageous. The Zeppelin, Eugen and Malaya each take 2 points of damage. Convoy 1A safely makes port in Russia.

Axis Control: Med, North Sea
Allied Control: Barents, North Atlantic, South Atlantic
Axis lead cut to 3 POC

Turn 5

The British feel more threatened by the U-boats now than the German surface fleet. The Tuscaloosa is the only US ship to enter the game.

Barents: Convoy 2B, Ark Royal, Formidable, Illustrious, Repulse, Renown, KGV, PoW, DoY
North Sea: Glorious, Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign, Warspite(2), Resolution, Devonshire, Kent
North Atlantic: Queen Elizabeth, Revenge, Malaya(2), Sussex, Tuscaloosa
South Atlantic: Hood, Anson, Howe, Ramillies(3), Exeter, Cumberland, Dorsetshire
No Allied speed rolls were needed.

The Axis responded by sending the Prinz Eugen(2) to the Baltic, and all 6 U-boats plus the Bismarck, Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin(2) to the North Atlantic. The Bismarck failed its speed roll. The Allies sink one U-boat and the survivors damage the Queen Elizabeth. In surface combat the Tirpitz takes 4 points of damage and is disabled and the Zeppelin is disabled. The Tirpitz sinks the Queen Elizabeth. In the Barents, the Axis LBA is devastating, sinking the Illustrious and disabling Convoy 2B back to America. The Axis maintain their 3 POC lead, but the blockade is reestablished.

Axis control: Med, Baltic
Allied control: Barents, North Sea, South Atlantic
Axis lead remains 3 POC

Turn 6

The Texas, Wichita and Augusta all enter the game. Heavy British carrier losses and light U-boat losses continue to plague Allied planning:

Barents: Repulse, Renown, KGV, PoW, DoY, Exeter, Cumberland, Kent
North Sea: Hood, Anson, Howe, Warspite(2), Malaya(2), Dorsetshire, Devonshire, Sussex
South Atlantic: Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign, Resolution, Revenge, Ramillies(3)
North Atlantic - Convoy 2B, Ark Royal, Formidable, Glorious, Texas, Augusta, Tuscaloosa, Wichita

The Bismarck goes to the Baltic, while Tirpitz, Prinz Eugen and Graf Zeppelin repair in Germany. The Italians remain in the Med and the 7 U-boats go to the North Sea to break the blockade. The allies fail to hit with their LBA and ASW rolls. The U-boats give Warspite 2 more damage points for a total of 4. The POC difference remains at +3 for the Axis.

Axis Control: Baltic, Med
Allied Control: Barents, North Atlantic, South Atlantic
Axis lead remains 3 POC.

Turn 7

The New York enters the game.

Barents: Convoy 2B, Ark Royal, PoW, KGV, DoY, Renown, Repulse, Exeter, Kent
North Sea: Glorious, Hood, Anson, Howe, Malaya(2), Dorsetshire, Devonshire
North Atlantic: Convoy 3C, Formidable, Texas, New York, Warspite(4), Augusta, Tuscaloosa, Wichita
South Atlantic: Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign, Resolution, Revenge, Ramillies(3), Sussex

The Axis respond by sending the Prinz Eugen to the Baltic, the Tirpitz, Bismarck, Graf Zeppelin, Pola, Zara and Fiume to the South Atlantic, and the 7 U-boats and LBA to the Barents. Allied ASW puts in its best performance yet, sinking 3 U-boats and disabling another, but the Axis response is devastating, as the 3 surviving subs hit Convoy 2B twice and sink it. In the South Atlantic, the Graf Zeppelin puts 2 points of damage into the Royal Sovereign. In the following surface combat, the Zeppelin is sunk, the Tirpitz takes 5 damage and is disabled to neutral port and the Bismarck is disabled to neutral port but remains undamaged. Return fire for the Axis is poor, with Revenge being diabled while taking 1 point of damage and Ramillies being disabled but without taking further damage. The 3 Italian cruisers flee to neutral port. The POC is once again even for the turn, the Axis maintaining its 3 POC lead going into the final turn.

Axis control: Baltic, Med
Allied control: North Sea, North Atlantic, South Atlantic
Axis still holds a 3 POC lead.

Turn 8

The Washington fails to enter the game.

Barents: Convoy 3C, Ark Royal, Formidable, PoW, KGV, DoY, Renown, Repulse
North Sea: Malaya(2), Warspite(4), Cumberland, Devonshire, Dorsetshire, Exeter, Kent, Sussex
North Atlantic: Glorious, Texas, New York, Augusta, Tuscaloosa, Wichita
South Atlantic: Hood, Anson, Howe, Ramillies(3), Resolution, Revenge(1), Royal Oak, Royal Sovereign(2)

The Axis response is pre-ordained, as the Allies controlled the South Atlantic last turn, trapping the Italian cruisers and the Bismarck and Tirpitz(5). Prinz Eugen goes to the Baltic, the LBA to the Barents, and the 5 U-boats to the North Sea. The Axis LBA hit convoy 3C but only inflict 1 point of damage, so it makes port, tying the game. The Allied battleships easily defeat the Axis fleet in the South Atlantic, but the ASW in the North Sea fails to get a single 5 or 6, let alone the five out of eight high rolls needed to hold the area. The POC are even at the end of the game, but because the Allies bid 1 POC, the Axis win the match.

Allied Control: Barents, North Atlantic, South Atlantic
Axis Control: Baltic, Med
POC are Even, but Axis win the game due to the bid.
